Backup Types Explained

Oracle Backups

  • RMAN Full Backup: A complete backup of the entire database, including all data files, control files, and archived redo logs. Ideal for full database recovery.
  • Incremental Backup: Backs up only the data that has changed since the last backup. Saves storage space and reduces backup time.
  • Data Pump Export: Exports database objects (tables, schemas, or entire databases) into a binary file. Useful for logical backups and migrations.

SQL Server Backups

  • Full Backup: Backs up the entire database, including all data and log files. Essential for complete recovery.
  • Incremental Backup: Captures only the changes made since the last full or incremental backup. Reduces backup size and time.
  • Transaction Log Backup: Backs up the transaction log to allow point-in-time recovery. Critical for databases in full recovery mode.

PostgreSQL Backups

  • Base Backup: A physical backup of the entire database cluster. Used as a starting point for WAL (Write-Ahead Logging) archiving.
  • Export (pg_dump): A logical backup that exports database objects into a SQL script or custom-format file. Ideal for migrations and logical backups.

SAP HANA Backups

  • Full Backup: Backs up the entire database, including data and log volumes. Essential for disaster recovery.
  • Incremental Backup: Captures only the changes since the last full or incremental backup. Reduces backup time and storage requirements.
  • Export: Exports database objects into a file for logical backups or migrations.
